Persian Party Dance
The word mehmooni means “party” in Persian. A mehmooni is a central part of Iranian culture where family and friends come together to talk, listen to music, dance, and celebrate. Persian dancing at a mehmooni is expressive, energetic, and highly social. Dancers use an improvised style that focuses on grace, rhythm, and playful interaction. Persian party dance focuses heavily on the upper body. Dancers use graceful, fluid arm movements and expressive hand gestures that curve or undulate to the rhythm. Rhythmic shoulder shakes (larzesh) and subtle hip movements are key elements, timed perfectly to the distinctive 6/8 Persian rhythm. Dancers aat a mehmooni use playful facial expressions, smiles, and eye contact to flirt with friends and family during the party.
There is no strict choreography. Dancers move freely around the room, stepping forward and backward or turning in slow circles. Guests often form a large circle, clapping to the beat while individuals or couples take turns dancing in the center. Shy guests are encouraged to step into the middle. Children, teenagers, parents, and grandparents all dance together at a Persian party. The style is universal across ages.
