SUMMARY:We are Nature: Rising and Falling Solstice Celebration
DESCRIPTION:NOoSPHERE Arts will kick off their outdoor season with a music\, dance\, and performing arts event celebrating the summer solstice. Held in the spectacular\, one-of-a-kind setting of wildflower meadows stretching across the roofs of an industrial plant against the iconic backdrop of the NYC skyline\, the event will be centered around a Sufi opening ritual honoring nature’s cycles\, performed by Whirling Dervish Farima Berenji. Farima—a Sufi Master and Magi from the bloodline of Iranian Zoroastrian Magi—and her sacred dancers will be accompanied by the Klezmer music and Sephardic folk melodies of The Shul Band. \nThe ceremony has been designed as a unique blend of Muslim and Jewish elements—epitomizing the possibility of interfaith collaboration. \nThe main event will involve solo acts\, duets and a whirling performance in which several participants—including Cyr wheelers—will interpret the movements of individual planets around a star. The show will also feature poetry readings and storytelling by Master Farima and be accompanied by the live music of the Shul Band. Following the whirlers’ performances\, The Shul Band will keep playing against the darkening night sky. \nIn addition NOoSPHERE Arts will also unveil the highly anticipated site-specific installation by this season’s KWBS Residency Award winners\, Ezra Campelli and Jeremy Clemente. Prepare to be amazed by “Westerlies\,” a mesmerizing fusion of sound and sculpture meticulously crafted for the Kingsland Wildflowers Green Roofs. \nFarima Berenji is an internationally acclaimed dance artist\, ethnologist\, choreographer\, instructor\, and archaeologist specializing in ancient\, sacred\, classical\, and folk dances spanning the millenniums of Persian civilization\, the Silk Road\, and the Near East. \nThe Shul Band\, led by Adam Feder\, plays music rooted in Jewish folk music but drawing on the musical wellsprings of New York City and of the whole world. It is equally prayerful and raucous\, meditative and joyful. The band has performed at major venues such as Carnegie Hall. \nNOoSPHERE Arts’ Stage Roof will offer a spectacular setting for the solstice celebration with dance\, music and art. \nTickets \nWe are Nature: Solstice Celebration (2022)\n \nSpirals of Ecstasy: A Sufi Incantation (2021)

SUMMARY:Yalda: Calling in the Light
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening gathering sharing stories\, poetry\, and more for Yalda\, the winter solstice. This year we dedicate our evening with prayers and sacred rituals honoring the bravery of the Iranian people who are facing a long period of unrest. Feel free to share stories or poetry during this third annual online Yalda gathering. Together let us bring back the light and call in peace and unity. \nShab-e Yalda (Yalda Night) is the Persian Winter Solstice Celebration on the eve of the Winter Solstice. The Persians believed that this night is the night of the birth of Ahura Mazda and Mithra\, Persian God of Light and Truth. \nThe longest and darkest night of the year is a time when friends and family gather together to eat\, drink and read poetry (especially Hafez) and Shahnameh until well after midnight. Fruits and nuts are eaten and pomegranates and watermelons are particularly significant. The red color in these fruits symbolizes the crimson hues of dawn and glow of life. The poems of Divan-e Hafez\, which can be found in the bookcases of most Iranian families\, are read or recited on various occasions such as this festival and Nowruz. Shab-e Yalda was officially added to Iran’s List of National Treasures in a special ceremony in 2008. Yalda is observed in Iran\, Azerbaijan\, Afghanistan\, Tajikistan\, by Iraqi Kurdistan\, and in Turkey by Kurds and Azeris. \nAll are welcome. Please register in advance to obtain a link to the online presentation. \nPlease consider making a donation at http://donate.farimadance.com to support our work.

DESCRIPTION:A weekend workshop intensive and performance with Master Farima Berenji. \nPersian Classical Dance Workshop\nSat. Oct 1\, 12:00 – 1:30PM\nExperience one of the world’s most enchanting dances. Persian dance is inspired by medieval Persian poetry\, miniature artwork\, sacred elements\, animals\, and geometry. Persian dance comes from an ancient culture of 8000 years and its movements often reflect the swirling of a birds\, beautiful gesture and feelings\, footwork patterns\, and dazzling spins. Many great Persian poets extolled dance in their poems and used it as a symbol of the power of life and represented dance as a spiritual instrument to become one with the Divine. \nPersian classical dance is delicate\, intricate\, subtle\, and full of meaning. Delicate hand movements\, gentle upper body undulations\, and facial expressions are the essential elements of this dance. The dance emphasizes feeling\, rather than movement. The dancer tells a story\, by displaying a variety of expressions.
