In Awakening\, Farima has combined the sacred phrases\, chants\, music\, and movements from many spiritual traditions to help touch the spiritual essence within us and to help us recognize it in others. These fundamental elements compose the ancient\, contemporary\, and devotional roots of sacred dance.\nFarima will teach her own findings\, methods\, techniques\, researchers\, and exercises that make the connection between soul and movement and that makes one an artist not just a dancer. She will show you how dance depicts the creation of the Universe through a spinning series of fantastic formations\, metamorphoses\, and rhythms. \nFarima will introduce you to ancient and contemporary Persian knowledge in a way that will make you proud to be a woman and yourself. Farima’s vision is to bring back the light and the power of the divine feminine\, the Goddesses and Lionesses\, through dance\, education\, and a sense of wonder and reverence.

SUMMARY:Jaheli (Baba Karam) Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn a fun Baba Karam choreography by dance artist\, instructor\, and scholar Farima Berenji. \nJaheli or Baba Karam is a playful imitation of the machismo style of dance done by the working class men of Tehran. The dance illustrates typical movements inspired by tough street gang members of the Qajar era known as “Jahel”. Jâheli is part of an Iranian sub-culture that has its origins in the 9th and 10th century\, a period when Turkic and Mongol marauders were present in eastern Iran. Local\, informal constabularies were formed to protect each town or village and the men of these groups\, called jâhel (meaning “ignorant” in Farsi)\, along with women\, developed a subculture and dance with a mixture of street smarts and spirituality. Today the dance is also performed by women\, and also sometimes Baba Karam refers to as a term for contemporary Persian Hip-Hop dancing. \nPre-register soon as space is limited. Contact Cathy Stoyko to register by email cdstoyko@uniserve.com or by phone (250) 218-0704

SUMMARY:Jaheli (Baba Karam) Dance Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Jaheli (Baba Karam) Dance Workshopwith Farima Berenji \nJaheli or Baba Karam is a playful imitation of the machismo style of dance done by the working class men of Tehran. \nAll new dances will be performed for our upcoming Fall and Winter performances. Students MUST attend all workshop classes and rehearsals to be placed in the performance. \nBoth men and women are welcome! Bring a fedora and shawl as props. \nJaheli (Baba Karam) Dance Workshop\, June 23 and 30\, 2016\nAll days paid in advance: $40\nDrop-in: $30

Please make sure to bring with you a set of thimbles and a set of teacup (small) saucers. \nHealing Circle/Zikr\nSaturday April 16th\, 7:30-9:00pm\nFarima will lead a healing circle/Zikr. All welcome. \nDance of the Seven Sacred Birds\nSunday April 17th\, 10:30am-4:30pm. Includes potluck lunch/Q&A 12:30-1:30pm.\nDance styles\, turns\, and healing movements based on the seven sacred Indo-Iranian/Persian birds.\nIn ancient Persia\, there were seven sacred animals\, birds\, and flowers believed to have carried the spirit of the Gods. In this workshop\, students will learn to incorporate the movement\, feeling\, expression\, and healing power of these birds and to discover their own spiritual bird!\nPersian sacred dance is inspired by Persian poetry and miniature artwork. These enchanting movements and feelings come from a ancient past spanning 10\,000 years. Numerous archeological antiquities and temples have been found that show the connection between animals and dance. These animals were a symbol of the power of life and represented as a spiritual instrument and these seven sacred birds each represented a certain Persian God or Goddess. These rituals and movements are considered the earliest known form of Persian dance and the origin of sacred dance. \nPrice\nFull weekend dance intensive including Friday and Saturday evening events.\n$175 before March 15th or $225 thereafter \nDance workshops\, one day only 10:30PM-4:30PM (please specify Friday or Saturday)\n$100 before March 15th or $125 thereafter \nRegistration\nRegister ONLINE WITH PAYPAL\nOR\nRegister by mailing a cheque made out to: Cathy Stoyko\, PO Box 1196\, Cumberland B.C.
